If you look closely you’ll spot some friends in the distance.

At last I want to show one of my attempts of capturing the meteor shower which was at its peak in the night from August 12th to 13th 2015. The weather forecast for this particular night was pretty good and so we decided to drive to a bit more remote area with a nice surrounding. But we haven’t been the only ones out there and due to all the camping people around the lake with all their bright campfires and headlamps I finally started photographing not until 04:00 a.m. as dawn was already noticeable.

Another snow field to cross.

There are some exciting caves along the litte Erlauf Canyon in Lower Austria. Unfortunately also this small piece of not-cultivated land becomes more and more touristic exploited.

The title image of these two series. For me this picture captures the mood of the rut very well. I took it in extremely poor light at ISO10000, f2.8, 1/40sec.

A wonderful calm morning at the lake completey embedded into the woods.

Picture perfect Hellebore at the end of the day.

I encountered this Chilean Flicker on my way back from shooting landscape images at the shores of Laguna Torre and it posed kindly for a portrait shot ...

An Andean Condor circling in front of the massiv granite towers in Torres del Paine National Park.

A behind-the-curtains-image. Since I’m not the kind of hide-building-photographer, I’m always looking for locations which provide natural camouflage like trees and bushes. And I’m also scouting for positions which can offer more than one direction and subject.

Early flowering friends part II

Sunday, 15 May 2016

As promised there‘s a second series of images of early flowering spring flowers. All these pictures have also been taken in Upper or Lower Austria during February and March this year.

Early flowering friends part II

The cranes during great evening conditions. One of these images which actually don’t work too well in 800px ;)

Swimming in single file.

Dark clouds on a rainy day.

Actually one can discover wildflowers in bloom all over the year like this bellflower ... (© Wolfgang Hackl)

Hidden in the woods at dawn.

Always a great experience to spend a summer night under the stars on top of a mountain ...

A Southern Lapwing in soft morning light. I was really fascinated by their colorful and shimmering plumage.

… and rocks.

Because of the high mountains the sun comes up pretty late in these areas, so when the light finally hits you it’s already very harsh. So I went for some high contrast back lit images.

The pleasure of the warming sun after a frosty night.

And they became more and more.

A tufted duck has a relaxed morning in the wetlands of Upper Austria.

So, now you know what it’s all about in Austria ;)

Fortunately their migration speed quite leisurely, so it wasn’t to exhausting and challenging to follow them over the days with all my stuff. Besides they know how to take a rest ;) Nevertheless they often use paths which are completely impassable for humans (like me). Sometimes I was just left standing and could only look after them hoping to catch them up again later or on the next day.

For a brief moment the fog scattered a bit and I could get a rather clear view at this bull.

A simple but quite beautiful scenery.
